Here’s the thing, I’ve been in a long & slow courtship with African Botanics since I was introduced to them last fall; by Lavanya at The Boxwalla, no less. In fact, this is the third time Boxwalla has featured African Botanics. And there’s a reason for that: This stuff is good. With each product that I discover and explore, I continue to be impressed. This brand, made in the heart of South Africa, uses ingredients that genuinely embody the beautiful diversity of that ecosystem. African Botanics utilizes the most concentrated active plant extracts and botanical actives that are super effective.

When I say effective, I’m talking advanced marine biochemistry and sustainably sourced plants from South Africa that work synergistically to leave your face supple and hydrated. Lavanya is a godsend for introducing this line to the masses, because Julia & Craig, the founders, are seriously redefining luxury skincare. And this mask is but one shining example of what African Botanics has to offer.

Le Masque Hydralift Intense

The Hydralift Intense Mask (50ml, $180) is a ‘serum strength’ mask that is packed with potent ingredients. It’s designed to increase moisture levels, lift, firm, smooth, and energize your skin, all while providing “mitochondrion protection and epidermal regeneration.” I mean, that seems like a tall order, but this mask’s ingredient deck is packed!

With ingredients like micro and mini Hyaluronic Acids, Aloe Ferox, fermented Yeast, Saccharides, Resurrection Plant and Mallow, this mask provides intense hydration. Add to that the marine oligo-elements (trace minerals), water-binding Red Seaweed, micronutrient-rich Microalga Glucans, Laminaria Algae, and Chlorella Sorokiniana, and you’ve got the means to hold on to that hydration. The Hydralift Intense also has brightening ingredients like stabilized Vitamin C and Niacinamide. Hello, Glow!✨

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of this mask is the use of a complex of Kappaphycus alvarezii (Algae) and Caesalpinia Spinosa (thorny shrub). This complex creates a mesh-like non-occlusive barrier to protect and support your skin’s most important function; keeping water in, and just about everything else out. Because this action helps reduce trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), the skin is left moist and hydrated.

This mask is versatile

This mask has a thin consistency which makes it so versatile.  You can wear it as a quick rinse off mask or overnight for deep penetration. My fave way to go is overnight. I apply it, allow it to dry down for about 10mins, and then I like to top it with an oil or cream. In the morning you might notice a little peeling, but that is normal. Rinse the mask off and continue with your skincare routine.

Julia, of African Botanics, made this suggestion and I gave it a try and oh my word 😍 HEAVEN.

Mask like a Pro: First, apply resurrection serum onto cleansed face. After that, apply a thin layer of the Le Masque Hydralift Intense mixed with three drops of Fleurs D’Afrique oil.

Your face called, she needs this mask!

Is this your first discovery of African Botanics? Here are a few others I highly recommend 👇🏽:

  • The Ressurection Cell Recovery Serum (review) or Fleurs D’Afrique Intensive Recovery Oil (review).
  • The Revitalizing Therapy Gel — I haven’t gotten around to writing a review about this gem yet, but applying this after an intense workout is divine. With Arnica, ginger, black pepper, and clove, this gel promotes circulation, reduces swelling, and is a leaves me feeling rejuvenated. I particularly love this after a long flight.
